Companion instrument: The IRM-1 is the dedicated environmental sensor for the Sonel PVM-1530 PV meter. It pairs via LoRa for extended range and uses the reSYNC function to fill measurement gaps automatically when the instruments move out of range. The IRM-1 can also be used as a standalone irradiance and temperature datalogger independent of a master meter.

Overview

The Sonel IRM-1 is a compact, field-hardened solar irradiance and temperature meter built specifically for photovoltaic commissioning and O&M testing. Its primary role is to provide the plane-of-array irradiance and module temperature data required to convert PV electrical measurements to standard test conditions (STC) per IEC 60891 — data that is essential for any meaningful comparison of field results to nameplate values.

The instrument measures three parameters simultaneously: solar radiation intensity in the plane of the module (in W/m² or BTU/ft²·h), PV module temperature via an external probe, and ambient temperature. A built-in inclination sensor confirms the measurement angle relative to the reference surface, and a built-in compass provides geographical orientation — both useful for documenting the exact measurement conditions and for initial array orientation work during design or commissioning.

Communication with the PVM-1530 master meter is via LoRa, which provides significantly greater wireless range than Bluetooth — a meaningful advantage on large utility-scale arrays where the IRM-1 may be mounted at the test module while the technician walks combiner rows. The reSYNC function handles connection gaps automatically: if the IRM-1 moves out of range, it continues logging environmental data internally and transfers it to the master meter when the connection is restored, ensuring no measurement is left without environmental context. The IRM-1 also functions as an independent datalogger with 999 cache cells and 5000 recorder records — useful for pre-construction irradiance surveys and shading analysis before a PVM is on site.

Key Capabilities
Irradiance Measurement
Measures plane-of-array solar radiation in W/m² or BTU/ft²·h. Mounted coplanar with the module face to capture the irradiance actually reaching the test module — not horizontal GHI. Results used directly in IEC 60891 STC correction via PVM-1530 or as standalone records.
Dual Temperature Channels
Simultaneous PV module temperature (via external PT probe, affixed to module rear surface) and ambient temperature. Both channels logged and timestamped with every irradiance record. Essential for IEC 60891 temperature correction of Voc, Isc, and Pmax.
LoRa & reSYNC
LoRa wireless interface provides longer range than Bluetooth — the IRM-1 stays at the test module while the technician walks the array. reSYNC automatically fills measurement records with buffered environmental data when the connection is restored, eliminating data gaps.
Inclination & Compass
Built-in inclination sensor confirms measurement angle relative to the reference surface — critical for ensuring the irradiance reading accurately represents the module plane. Built-in compass records geographic orientation for array documentation and shading analysis.
Standalone Datalogger
999 cache memory cells and 5000 recorder records with continuous (overwrite) or one-time recording modes. Can be deployed independently of a master meter for pre-construction irradiance surveys, shading analysis, or seasonal yield studies. All records timestamped and transferable via USB.
IP65 Field Durability
Rated IP65 — dust-tight and protected against water jets. Designed for outdoor use on operating PV installations in all weather conditions. The IRM-1 can be left mounted at the test module unattended throughout a measurement session without protective enclosure.
